What are component speakers?
Speaker systems designed for installation in cars and trucks generally fall under two categories; coaxial and component.
Coaxial
Also referred to as "full range", a coaxial speaker is tasked with reproducing a wide range of frequencies (low to high) using a single enclosure. They tend to be cheaper to make, require less space and are typically fitted as standard equipment by car manufacturers. A common configuration for a 2-way coaxial speaker would be a "woofer" (to handle the lower frequencies) with a "tweeter" (higher frequencies) fixed on top. A step up to 3-way design would add a mid-range driver mounted in between the tweeter and woofer.
Components
A component speaker however is tasked with reproducing a specific band (or component) of the audible frequency range. Typical component speakers would comprise separate drivers such as a tweeter, mid-range and woofer installed in their own dedicated enclosures. For example, the JBL GX600C is a 2-way component set with a separate soft dome tweeter.
Additionally, a "sub-woofer" could be included to handle very low frequencies only. Subwoofers usually have their own enclosure in the rear of the vehicle.
Understanding crossovers
As speaker components are designed to only reproduce a specific frequency range, a crossover (a type of electronic circuit) ensures that those specific frequencies...and no other frequencies... are sent to them. For example a woofer cannot reproduce high frequencies accurately, so by only sending it low frequencies it won't be trying to reproduce high frequencies so it can focus on the job it was designed for.
Are components better than coaxial?
Generally speaking, because speaker components are designed to deliver the best performance for a specific frequency range they tend to produce a better overall sound quality as part of a complete car audio system. That's not to say that coaxials aren't capable of delivering good quality audio with the right design.
